The motto of our Adult Program is "Through the Jiujitsu lifestyle, become a better you." Simply put, jiujitsu will change your life. Our goal at Synergy Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy is to make jiujitsu as a mechanism for human growth and development and becoming the best version of yourself. If you fully em,brace and live the jiujitsu lifestyle, you will; grow mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Synergy Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy's adult program is designed for men and women of all ages and abilities. We are open six days a week including both the mornings and evenings as well as weekly open mat sessions on Fridays and Saturdays.
Synergy Jiujitsu offers the following types of adult training opportunities:
Gi Jiujitsu. In this class, students practice jiujitsu wearing a traditional uniform called a "gi". The gi is considered a weapon and can be gripped and used for both offensive and defensive techniques. Gi classes are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
No-Gi Jiujitsu. Other than the obvious difference of clothing type, the strategies of no-gi training and competition vary considerably from the gi. The pace tends to be quicker and has a more narrow range of techniques. Typical attire in the no-gi class includes a rashguard or t-shirt and grappling/boardshorts or leggings. No-gi classes are held every Saturday morning or during open mat.
Open Mat. Open mat allows Synergy students to practice newly developed techniques, drill their favorite techniques, address technical problems and strategic gaps in their overall game and "roll" (spar) in a no instructor-led atmosphere, with or without the gi. Open mat is held on Friday evenings.
Synergy Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy offers a week of free trial classes to see how you like Jiujitsu and get. a feeling for our training environment. To take advantage of this offer, you can do the following:
1. Schedule a class. Send us an email to determine the appropriate day and time to come in.
2. What to bring. We recommend bringing a t-shirt or rash guard (spandex type top) to wear underneath the gi (uniform). If you don't have a gi, come a few minutes early so we can get you set up with a loaner gi. Additionally, we strongly advise bringing flip flops. so you can move on and off the mat (to use the restroom, get a drink of water) without having to put on your shoes.
3. Show up early. Show up at least 10 minutes early to the first class. When you come in, just wait by the coach desk and an instructor will greet you and have you fill out the appropriate forms and also hand you. a loaner gi to try on.
4. Waiver. Fill out the student application and waiver when you arrive.
Classes are typically 1 hour and 30 minutes long (the basic's class is typically 1 hour). Each class is generally divided into three sections::
1. Warm Up. We incorporate Jiu Jitsu-specific drills, movements, and exercises that increase blood flow to muscles and tendons to prevent injury while reinforcing basic technical concepts that contribute to a solid foundation.
2. Technique. The instructor typically teaches two new techniques that follow a theme for the week or sometimes month. After each move is taught, students have the opportunity to practice the move with a partner. Sometimes drilling (technical repetition had a higher, more intense pace) is included to practice the move at a more realistic pace and help condition the body at the same time.
3. Rolling. The last part of class is reserved for controlled and supervised sparring, more commonly referred to as “rolling.” This is the portion of class where the rubber meets the road and students can go in a live situation against a resisting partner. Sparring is the heart of BJJ training that strengthens its efficacy and provides a fun and challenging workout.
For those just starting their BJJ journey, your first couple of weeks will be different. You will first be taught basic theory and objectives of this martial art style. After learning some basic techniques from our Foundational Curriculum, we will slowly introduce you to sparring situations over the next several weeks. We will have you do “coaching rolls” where we pair you up with a more experienced student who is technical and fluid and can talk you through what you need to do. You don’t have to be in great condition. Your condition and fitness for grappling will build over a period of several weeks. In addition, you can go at your own pace.
